Surviving or Thriving Symposium
1997

Six women curators—Lowery Stokes Sims, Metropolitan Museum of Art; Barbara
London, MoMA; Joaneath Spicer, Walters Art Museum; Sahsha Newman, Yale
Univerisity Art Gallery; Judi Freeman, visiting fellow, Harvard University; and
Therese Thau Heyman, guest curator, National Museum of American Art,
Smithsonion—and moderator Dr. Kendall Taylor discussed their careers and
issues facing women curators across the country. It is noted that the typical
career path for their male counterparts, from curator to director, is generally still
closed to women.
