It was an evening of artistic enlightenment, featuring Joyce Pomeroy Schwartz and Lowery Stokes Sims. “I have known Joyce for a long time–since 1972, when there was a glass ceiling for working women–but not for Joyce. She joined the Pace Gallery as Director of Commissions, helping artists realize their works of public art–and cracked her way through that ceiling. When I founded ArtTable, the leadership organization for professional women in the visual arts, Joyce came aboard, and to this day she is a member of that team.”

New York, NY | Tour of Martine Gutierrez “ANTI-ICON: APOKALYPSIS” at Ryan Lee Gallery

Program Page | Exhibition Tour

ArtTable celebrated Pride Month by organizing a visit to Ryan Lee Gallery for a guided tour of “ANTI-ICON: APOKALYPSIS”, a daring new body of work by artist Martine Gutierrez. The tour was led by Partner and gallery Co-Founder Mary Lee.

Through 17 new works, Gutierrez transformed herself into a multitude of idols. Her figure, adorned with the barest of essentials, served as the catalyst, reflecting a sense of dystopian futurism onto the symbols of the past. With each metamorphosis, Gutierrez re-envisioned a diverse canon of radical heroines who had achieved legendary cultural influence over thousands of years in both art history and pop culture.

Virtual | The AT Forum: Women in Leadership

Program Page | Virtual, Networking

In this Pecha Kucha-style program, our speakers were provided with just 3 minutes each to respond to one of three prompt questions, after which all attendees went into breakout rooms for a group discussion. In this first program in The AT Forum series, speakers were prompted with the below questions:

As a woman in a leadership role, what were the top 3 challenges when you started your career and what are they now? Are the challenges from your early career days resolved? How have they changed?

One of the biggest challenges for women in the workforce is a work-life balance since child care, elder care, and other family responsibilities still weigh more heavily on women. What are 3 things that would help change this burden and enhance this balance?

What are the ways in which women can help other women while also enhancing their own leadership roles? How have you already incorporated these into your practice?

The AT Forum is a new recurring program series in which ArtTable members are invited to speak to a specific topic in a Pecha Kucha-style format, followed by breakout room discussions for all attendees to get involved.

“The AT Forum presentation and discussion was absolutely fantastic! I thoroughly enjoyed getting to know fellow art enthusiasts and women leaders in the arts. New York, NY | Annual Leadership Series – Latinx & Latin American Identity & Representation in the Visual Arts

Program Page | Panel Discussion | Recording

Latinx representation in the arts is not simply “having a moment;” Latinx and Latin American artists and arts professionals have and continue to contribute to the development of the culture and history of the United States. There is added pressure, applied to the United States in particular, to recognize its fellow “America”n countries due to the phenomenon Dr. Mari Carmen Ramirez termed “Latinization,” the influence of those of Latin American descent as the largest ethnic group in the U.S., since historically their contributions have been minimized and excluded in the canon of art history, both in the Americas and internationally.

The speakers on this panel shared their experiences of the past, their plans for the present, and how we can all move forward in the future to continue bringing Latinx/Latin American arts and culture to the forefront of the art world.

This panel was moderated by CJ Greenhill Caldera, Post-War and Contemporary Specialist and Head of Sale, Americas at artnet, with panelists:

  • Marysol Nieves | VP and Senior Specialist, Latin American Art, Christie’s
  • Gabriela Palmieri | Founder and Principal, Palmieri Fine Art, Inc.
  • E. Carmen Ramos | Chief Curator, National Gallery of Art
“I just moved from Brazil to New York to do my masters in Art Business at Sotheby’s Institute of Art and it was very important to me to attend this event. Besides feeling super welcomed, it was great to know that Latinx & Latin American art is being seen and discussed in an international and global way. Most of all, I felt encouraged and hopeful.”

The Aldrich Contemporary Art Museum Chief Curator Amy Smith-Stewart provided our group with an in-depth and comprehensive tour of 52 Artists: A Feminist Milestone. The exhibition celebrates the 51st anniversary of the historic exhibition Twenty Six Contemporary Women Artists, curated by Lucy R. Lippard and presented at The Aldrich Contemporary Art Museum in 1971. 52 Artists showcased work by many of the artists included in the original 1971 exhibition, alongside a new roster of 26 female-identifying or nonbinary emerging artists, tracking the evolution of feminist art practices over the past five decades. 52 Artists encompassed the entirety of the Museum (approx. 8,000 sq. ft)—the first exhibition to do so in The Aldrich’s new building which was inaugurated in 2004.

ArtTable Goes to Baltimore!

Program Page | Day Trip

June 2022 was a month for travel with ArtTable, as a handful of members and friends came together to explore the art scene of Charm City, aka Baltimore, Maryland. Our day began with a visit to the American Visionary Art Museum, where we were led on a tour by the museum’s amazing founder, Rebecca Hoffberger, who led us through her last exhibition before her retirement at the end of the year. Next we visited the private collection of local CPA Keith Eric Timmons, which boasts works by Sanford Biggers, Amy Sherald, Joyce Pommery Schwartz, and more. After stopping for a lovely lunch at Gertrude’s Chesapeake Kitchen, we enjoyed some free time at the Baltimore Museum of Art, in particular to view the long-awaited Joan Mitchell retrospective. Our final stop of the day was to Goya Contemporary Gallery, where Executive Director and Partner Amy Raehse give us an insider’s look at the work of Louise Fishman, as well as a trip through the gallery’s flat files.

“Such a fun day, surrounded by inspiring women! I’m so glad this was organized, I don’t think I would have made it out there if it wasn’t for ArtTable organizing this trip for us. Thank you for a beautiful day.”
