Art and Politics: Rethinking Arts Policy and Cultural Diplomacy
May 23, 2011

The Washington, DC, chapter of ArtTable held a timely panel discussion
exploring arts, culture, and public policy, with DC arts policy leaders, Jim Leach,
chairman, National Endowment for the Humanities; Richard Kurin,
undersecretary for history, art, and culture, Smithsonian Institution; and J. P.
Singh, associate professor, graduate program in communication, culture, and
technology, Georgetown University. They offered their perspective on the ever-
changing arts environment, including recent changes to federal support for the
arts and implications for public policy, the role of the arts and humanities in
shaping cultural diplomacy, and what one can learn from our counterparts in
other countries about support for the arts and humanities, among other related
themes.
