Collection Visit with Joy Simmons and Special Presentation by Cesar Garcia

Joy Simmons welcomed ArtTable members to her home for a tour of her renowned collection as well as a special presentation by Cesar Garcia, founding director/chief curator of the new art space the Mistake Room. Simmons is a Los Angeles–based patron and collector and serves as board chair of the Mistake Room, is a former board member of Venice Arts, the Watts House Project, and the Santa Monica Museum of Art, and was also a founding board member and vice president of the Friends of the California African American Museum in Los Angeles. Her collection focuses on African-American artists and artists of African descent. The Mistake Room is a new, independent international contemporary art space that launched in Los Angeles in January 2014. Garcia formerly served as the Mistake Room’s associate director/senior curator (2007–2012), was the United States Commissioner for the Thirteenth International Cairo Biennale, a curator of Made in L.A. 2012, and one of the curatorial advisors for the 55th International Venice Biennale.
