Join ArtTable New York chapter for a coffee break!

With so many now working from home, separated from colleagues and usual networks of friends, many of us are missing the stimulating conversations and debates that filled the working week. This has led us to organize the AT Local Coffee Break, a casual conversation over a hot drink, providing a virtual space for members of the New York chapter to come together to network and discuss newsworthy topics in our community. Join the New York programs committee co-chairs Jacqueline Towers-Perkins and Sarah McNaughton for an interactive and informal back-and-forth to discuss the most pressing art world topics of the week and to share your thoughts on the industry developments hitting the headlines. An informal agenda of topics will be circulated prior to the event. Please come prepared to speak up and to be called on for your opinion – we want to hear your thoughts!

Please Note: numbers for this program are limited so should you no longer be able to attend the session, please let us know as soon as possible so that another member can take your place.

ABOUT THE FILM

Bringing to light the hidden and unknown photos shot by both professional and vernacular African American photographers, Through a Lens Darkly: Black Photographers and the Emergence of a People opens a window into the lives of black families, whose experiences and perspectives are often missing from the traditional historical canon. African Americans historically embraced the medium as a way to subvert popular stereotypes as far back as the Civil War era, with Frederick Douglass photographed in a suit and black soldiers posing proudly in their uniforms.

These images show a much more complex and nuanced view of American culture and its founding ideals. Inspired by the book Reflections in Black by photo historian Deborah Willis, the film features the works of esteemed photographic artists Carrie Mae Weems, Lorna Simpson, Anthony Barboza, Hank Willis Thomas, Coco Fusco, Clarissa Sligh, James Van Der Zee, Gordon Parks, and many others.
