Virtual | ‘The Empress and I,’ with Donna Stein and Dorothy Goldeen

10am PT / 11am MT / 12pm CT / 1pm ET

Please join us for a conversation between author Donna Stein Korn and art advisor Dorothy Goldeen about Donna’s newest book, The Empress and I: How an Ancient Empire Collected, Rejected and Rediscovered Modern Art. The book was written to reflect Donna’s work to assemble a collection of contemporary art for a new Museum of Contemporary Art in Tehran, Iran under the auspices of the Imperial Empress Pahlavi, wife of the Shah of Iran. She writes about how she worked curatorial miracles through her connections with colleagues especially in the USA and with encouragement from the Shabanou and some obstacles from other government members.

Virtual | ‘Making a Great Exhibition’ – A New Children’s Book by Doro Globus, with Genevieve Martin

9am PT / 10am MT / 11am CT / 12pm ET

Please join Doro Globus, Managing Director of David Zwirner Books, and Genevieve Martin, Director of External Affairs and Advancement at the Children’s Museum of the Arts, for a discussion on the motivation behind Globus’ newly published children’s book, Making a Great Exhibition. Globus will also talk about the publishing program at David Zwirner. We will hear more about how the program works and why it is a crucial part of the gallery’s offerings.

In Making a Great Exhibition, Globus identified a need to demystify the museum space and offer insight into how it works. Thinking beyond the finished product–the exhibition or the artwork–Globus steps back to show how many people and skills are involved along the way. She features curators, art handlers, educators, photographers, shippers, museum visitors, and more as she describes the process. Both author and illustrator, Rose Blake, were raised in the art world, spending their time in studios, doing homework in museum offices, and going to special openings. They have teamed up to share their experiences and love for this world of creative people.

Parents are encouraged to bring their children to this program! All registrants will receive a link to a downloadable activity kit for kids.

Virtual | Fierce Poise: Helen Frankenthaler and 1950s New York

2pm ET | 1pm CT | 11am PT

Join us for a discussion with Alexander Nemerov, author of Fierce Poise: Helen Frankenthaler and 1950s New York, and Sarah Kirk Hanley, an independent prints and editions expert and critic based in the New York area, who is currently writing an essay for the Dulwich Picture Gallery for their Fall exhibition of woodcuts by Helen Frankenthaler.

Dr. Nemerov’s biography of Frankenthaler encompasses her life and work beginning with her college years at Bennington, where Nemerov’s father was her English teacher, and Clement Greenberg, her first significant romantic partner, gave seminars in Art history and organized exhibitions. Nemerov concentrates his text on Frankenthaler of the 1950s which, Karen Wilkin’s review of the book writes,” she was notably strong and inventive, almost from the start at a time when artists were expected to spend years maturing before their work was considered to be worthy of attention.” Nemerov acknowledges her importance as an Ab-ex painter and also writes about Freudian sources of her lifetime romantic relationships. There is a great deal to unpack about this major abstract woman artist of the twentieth century.
